The Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical firm, which is owned by Cipla, announced yesterday that it has received final approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the brand name Cialis.
The approval of Cialis comes after years of, with the drug still on patent for several years.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Cialis and in generic form, is approved to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and certain other cardiovascular conditions, according to the drug’s official release.
Cialis and Viagra are also the subject of generic competition from generic drugmakers Eli Lilly and Icos and Mylan Inc., which is producing the drug. The new generics are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2018, with Cialis expected to be sold at the same cost of the original brand name product.
The drug is also expected to be available in a cheaper generic form, said the release, and has been in the market for about a year.
The company announced the drug was expected to begin sales in the fourth quarter of 2018.
“We have had excellent experience with Cialis since its introduction, and we are very pleased with the FDA’s approval.
